Dr Marcus Redley is currently a research fellow at ARU investigating the care and support of adults with intellectual and development disabilities. His current focus is on 1) the empowerment and protected of adults with intellectual disabilities when online and using social media, and 2) how the lives of adults with profound and severe intellectual disabilities can be improved by enhancing the communicative competencies of personal assistants and direct support staff.

Prior to joining ARU, Marcus held research posts at the universities of East Anglia, Cambridge and Edinburgh. His academic background is in the social sciences, with specialist knowledge in qualitative research methods. Marcus is also currently a tutor at Lucy Cavendish College at Cambridge University.

Much of Marcus' research has focused on the lives of men and women with intellectual disabilities. These efforts, which straddled health inequalities and social inclusion, have included studies of well-being, supported eating and drinking, epilepsy management, access to secondary and specialist healthcare, citizenship and voting rights, adult safeguarding, advocacy, and the Mental Capacity Act. Other areas he has researched include policies promoting the care of people with dementia in their own homes, suicidal behaviour, and decision-making in couple households.
