Rank Professor of Engineering, Department of Engineering, University of Cambridge
Professor Paul Tucker is Rank Professor of Engineering and works within the Turbomachinery, energy and fluid mechanics division at the University of Cambridge Whittle Laboratory. His key research interest is the computation of unsteady, turbulent, complex geometry aerodynamic flows.
His current research interests include improving the efficiency of turbomachinery in order to reduce the environmental impact of gas turbines and improving the design of jet noise prediction systems. Much of Professor Tucker’s work, including these research areas uses Large Eddy Simulation (LES) techniques.
Amongst many other research projects, Professor Tucker is involved in the Cambridge UGTP Whole Engine Computational Aeroacoustics Consortium. With the increasing understanding of the possible contribution of aircraft take-off noise to the environment and illness, such as hypertension, this project aims to manipulate turbine flow fields in order to reduce their acoustic signatures.
Prior to joining the University of Cambridge, Professor Tucker worked as a Professor in the Civil and Computational Engineering Centre in the University of Wales and as a Senior Lecturer in the Department of Engineering at The University of Warwick. He is a member of American Institute of Aeronautics and Astronautics Fluid Dynamics Technical Committee and an Associate Editor of the AIAA Journal.
Other current research projects include
- LES Modelling of Turbine Blade Trailing Edges
- Unsteady fan flow modelling on GPUs
- Open Rotor Intake Aerodynamics
- Aerodynamics and Aeroacoustics of co-flowing jets
- Computation of Internal Flows using Zonal Large Eddy Simulation
