Peter Guthrie is responsible for the establishment of the Department of Engineering Centre for Sustainable Development which provides a focal point for research and teaching in engineering for sustainable development, seeking to address the pressing issues that face engineers in responding to the increasing demands being made in this area. The Centre has grown out of support provided by the Royal Academy of Engineering, EPSRC, Land Securities plc and The Dickerson Group of companies .
Research is centred on the inclusion of sustainable development in the process of assessment and decision making in mining, construction, and large scale development; on the application of sustainable development principles to developing countries including countries post conflict; on the use of non traditional materials including waste as useable construction materials for housing, roads and structures.
