Senior Researcher, Microsoft Research Cambridge

Advait Sarkar is a senior researcher at Microsoft Research Cambridge. Within Microsoft Research he is a member of the Human Experience and Design Group. His two main research interests are the future of humanity in the age of artificial intelligence, and universal data literacy.

In the future of humanity research strand, the focus is on using design as a tool to probe questions such as: what is the limit of automation? How can artificial intelligence augment human capability? How should we define humanity and identity? What are the moral, ethical, and socio-economic implications of advanced artificial intelligence?

Advait's aim for universal data literacy is to improve the usability and accessibility of tools for sophisticated analytics, which involves data management, statistics, and machine learning. His design work combines theories of interaction and visual representation, with artificial intelligence and machine learning, to produce novel analytics systems that are easier to use.

Advait's other research interests include live coding, computer music, psychology of programming, applied machine learning, transport research, and bibliometrics.
