Professor of Photonics, Centre for Photonic Systems, Department of Engineering, University of Cambridge

Professor Richard Penty conducts his research within the Photonic Communication Systems research group in the Department of Engineering. In addition to his duties at the University, he also manages the semiconductor laser workpackage of the PHOTON project and is a UK representative on the EU COST 267 management committee. He is also a Founder of Zinwave, a manufacturer of Active Wideband In-Building Wireless Coverage Solutions.

His research in optical communications began through a sponsorship with the National Coal Board for whom he designed a 1Mb/s optical line card. He received both his undergraduate and PhD degrees from the University of Cambridge, after which he took up lectureships at both Bath and Bristol. He is also a fellow of Sidney Sussex College, Cambridge.

His current research interests include

  • Optical data communications
  • MMF systems (digital and analogue)
  • High-speed optical communications systems
  • Wavelength conversion and WDM networks
  • Optical amplifiers
  • Optical non-linearities for switching and routing applications
  • RF over fibre
  • High power semiconductor lasers
