Sandra Dawson's research interests are organisational structure, leadership and change; technology transfer and knowledge sharing; health management and health policy.

She was Director of Cambridge Judge Business School from 1995 to 2006 and prior to that was Professor of Organisational Behaviour (1990-1995) and Deputy Director of the Management School (1987-1994) at Imperial College in London. She is a Non-Executive Director of Oxfam. She chairs the UK Advanced Institute of Management (a cross business school collaboration) and is a member of the UK India Roundtable and the Advisory Board of the UK India Business Council. She has held nonexecutive or chair office in Barclays plc, Riverside Mental Health NHS Trust, J P Morgan Fleming Claverhouse Investment Trust, RAND Europe (UK), the Public Health Laboratory Service, the Senior Salaries Review Body, the ESRC Research Priorities Board, Cambridge Econometrics, the Fire and Rescue Service Ministerial Sounding Board, and the External Advisory Committee of the Ruskin School, Oxford.

Professor Dawson was Master of Sidney Sussex College between 1999 and 2009, where she is still a fellow. She was made a Dame of the British Empire in 2004 in recognition of her contribution to higher education and management research.
