Lecturer, Institute for Manufacturing, Department of Engineering, University of Cambridge

Dr Jim Platts came to academia with 23 years experience in industry; working on the design, development and manufacture of the large composite moulded blades for wind turbines. He has retained his interest in the development of the wind turbine industry and technology by aiding the development of this industry in China.

The Institute for Manufacturing is involved with Airbus UK, with the development and optimisation of engineering and new technologies, which will be core manufacturing technologies in the next generation of Airbus wings.

Dr Platts’ has also sustains a concern for ethical ownership and leadership in manufacturing and an interest in skill-based manufacturing. As a result he researches the development of professional competence and trust as well as the development of sustainable communities.

His current research interests include

  • Optimum performance component design in composites
  • Advanced production processes for composites
  • Advanced metal wing production processes
  • Ethical leadership
