Professor in Biological Chemistry, University of Cambridge

Until his untimely death in November 2020, Professor Abell was the Pro-Vice-Chancellor for Research and Professor of Biological Chemistry at the University of Cambridge. Chris was the Todd-Hamied Fellow of Christ's College and co-founder of Astex Technology and co-founder of Sphere Fluidics.

Chris' research achievements included pioneering work on the use of fragments to address the challenge of the design of small molecules that interact selectively with macromolecules. His second major area of research was to develop the use of microdroplets in microfluidics as a novel experimental platform for biological chemistry. This research is highly interdisciplinary and involves biological chemistry, microfluidics, nanofabrication, laser spectroscopy and mass spectrometry.
