Professor Reiner is a political scientist and is Assistant Director of the Energy Policy Research Group at Cambridge University. He is a Research Associate of the Joint Program on the Science and Policy of Global Change and of the Centre for Energy and Environmental Policy Research at MIT. His research focuses on energy and climate change policy, economics, regulation and public attitudes, with a focus on social license to operate. Specific topics include national net-zero ambitions, carbon dioxide removal and deep decarbonisation, public attitudes towards low-carbon technologies, industrial decarbonisation and the dynamics of demonstration. Methods include public and stakeholder surveys, economic, policy and historical analysis. David has led public and stakeholder surveys on energy and climate change in over a dozen European countries and on six continents.
David has received grants from UK Research and Innovation and the European Commission on topics including carbon dioxide removal and heat decarbonisation. He has also served on various UK Government and European Commission expert panels. In particular, he is one of two academic members of the CCUS Council, which is chaired by the UK Energy Minister and is on the Advisory Board of the £200m Industrial Decarbonisation Challenge. He is also a non-executive director of Gore Street Capital.
